Post-Pandemic Social Anxiety

With society reopening many people are experiencing worsening social anxiety. After more than a year of lock down here in Michigan, things most people used to do daily, such as going to school or work, grocery shopping, seeing old friends, and making small talk are now causing an increase in anxiety symptoms.

We dreamed of this day for so long, fantasizing about what it would be like for lockdown restrictions to lift, and go back to lives we once knew. Now we're approaching a majority of the country being vaccinated, and the common theme I'm seeing among clients is that we are not prepared to go back to our “old normal”.

The most important thing to remember is that you are not alone in this newfound anxiety; additionally: you have the tools to combat these pesky feelings! If you need some additional support during this transition, I have included a few tips to support you along the way…

  1. Challenge thoughts that may hold you back. Anxiety has a way of making our brains spiral… focus on the facts!

  2. If you are returning to work or school in the next few weeks/months: Before you actually need to go back full time, drive to your place of work/school and walk around for a bit until you start to feel more comfortable (exposure therapy).

  3. Make a plan for how many social situations you can handle in one week, don’t feel guilty for sticking to it. It’s understandable if you are more easily overwhelmed or burnt out during this time.

  4. Have a plan: How are you going to pull from your coping skills when you are feeling overwhelmed? Have a list of ways to help calm your nerves (make sure it is easily accessible). For some that may mean journaling or mediation, for others it may be a simple walk or other form of movement. Use what works for you!

Most importantly, remember this feeling is temporary and it is okay to ask for additional help. Your feelings are valid!
