Self-Compassion Work

Self-Compassion Focused Therapy

The hope with Self-Compassion Focused Therapy is to move from Self-Criticism. Self-criticism is a natural process occurring across mental health disorders. When self-criticism is excessive, vulnerability to mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety increases.

Compassion-focused approaches can effectively address these concerns by working to break the negative cycles of self-sabotage and self-harm with 3 main components:

  1. Self-kindness

  2. A sense of common humanity

  3. Mindfulness

Self-compassion involves being aware of our own pain and suffering, and understanding that this is a hard, but normal human experience.  Directing feelings of kindness and care towards ourselves, and focusing our attention and energy on how we might alleviate our pain.

Self-compassion is about working to break the shame cycle and learning to grant yourself permission to show up imperfectly in the world. It welcomes clients to find the good (or helpfulness) in all parts of themselves.
